It is estimated that more than 10% of agricultural land in the region is affected by the rains | Nagpur News

Nagpur: Crops on more than 5.56 lakh hectares of farmland across Vidarbha are estimated to be mainly affected due to heavy rains that hit the region last month.
Although the focus has been on eastern Vidarbha, estimated casualties are higher in the west.
The Nagpur division covers the eastern districts of Vidarbha and Amravati falls under the western. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had traveled to Gadchiroli in the east to assess the flood situation.
However, a larger area is estimated to be affected in western Vidarbha, with Yavatmal accounting for the highest losses.
If primary estimates are considered, the affected area in Nagpur division is 2.15 lakh hectares and then 3.5 lakh hectares in Amravati division. Sources said that out of this total, more than 1.5 lakh hectares are in Yavatmal alone.
Flooding in the Wardha River has largely affected parts of Yavatmal district, a source said.
Crop damage is expected to be between 33% and even completely. There may be areas along the river where all the harvest has been washed away. There are chances of recovery after the water stored in the fields dries up, but crop loss cannot be fully recovered after that. A large number of farmers may only have to rely on the rabi crop after that, said a source involved in the loss estimation process. Most of the losses could be in cotton and soybean crops, sources said.
At 5.54 lakh hectares, up to 10% of farmland in the two clubbed divisions is estimated to be damaged.
In Nagpur division, the cultivable land for Kharif stands at 23 lakh hectares and 32 lakh hectares in Amravati division.
However, the area covered by crop insurance is higher in Amravati. About 11 lakh hectares have been covered by the Prime Minister’s crop insurance scheme in Amravati division. As the program ended on Monday, the exact numbers have yet to be finalized, a source said. Meanwhile, in Nagpur division, more than 1.5 lakh hectares have been secured. The total area under Kharif is fixed at 23 lakh hectares in Nagpur division.
Activist Sahebrao Pawar alleged political negligence towards Yavatmal as Shinde and Fadanvis only visited the eastern districts. The losses are well above the government’s estimate, he said.
