Moody’s Land, Hewitt-Trussville’s Jones and Reaves win state championships

HUNTSVILLE — There are three things in life that are inevitable: death, taxes and Moody’s Cory Land winning a state championship.

Land won his 207th straight match and finished a 56-0 undefeated season by pinning Homewood’s Joe Galvan in 44 seconds in the AHSAA State Wrestling Tournament here for the 4A/5A 138-pound championship. This is Land’s fifth straight state championship.

Land wasn’t the only big winner in The Tribune’s coverage area. Hunter Jones of Hewitt-Trussville defended his 7A title at 195 pounds with a technical win (17-2) over Todd Whitmire of Huntsville. And the Huskies’ Lucas Reaves pinned Bob Jones’ Manny Marrerro to win the 152-pound division in 7A.

Hewitt-Trussville finished third overall in the state championships, finishing behind Thompson and Vestavia Hills.

Moody finished seventh as a team in 4A/5A.

Weaver High School closed out the 2022 Class 1A/4A State Wrestling Championships with a spectacular finish thanks to the pins of 160-pound junior Joshua Johannson and 182-pound senior Devin Anderson in the Bearcats’ final two games on Saturday to overtake day one leader and Calhoun County rival Ohatchee.

Those clutch efforts gave coach Andy Fulmer’s Bearcats a final 82-81 point advantage as Weaver won his 10and state wrestling champion saturday as 67and The AHSAA State Wrestling Championships concluded at the Von Braun Center. It also ended an 18-year drought for the legendary wrestling program.

Johannson (28-0) won the final 160-pound bout against Shawn Sponsor of Montgomery Catholic with a fall at 2:48. Those six points put the Bearcats within striking distance, and Anderson (56-0) pinned Ashville’s Dylan Harris at 3:59 for six points that gave his team the lead.

Ohatchee closed with Ethan Thrash’s (19-3) 7-5 decision over Ashville’s Layden Olson at 220 pounds to close out the action for the schools.

Ashville, the defending state champion, was third with 69 points.

In Class 7A, Thompson won his ninth state championship with six of eight wrestlers in the final matches winning championships. Thompson had eight wrestlers in the finals for the second time in school history. Coach Shawn Weltzin’s Warriors finished with 194.5 points and defending state champion Vestavia Hills had 118.5. Hewitt-Trussville finished third with 106.5.

Thompson’s James Latona (55-3) capped his career for the Warriors with a 15-4 major decision win in the 138-pound final for that third state title. Also championship winners were Thomas Giere (35-0) at 106 pounds; Cory Jones (38-11) at 120 pounds; Yanni Vines (41-3) at 126 pounds; Will Garrett (39-9) at 160 pounds; Carson Freeman (49-9) at 170 lbs.

In class 5A/6A, Mortimer Jordan won his first state wrestling championship with 112.5 points. Arab was second at 119 and McAdory was third at 112.5.

The Blue Devils, coached by Josh Pate, two individual state champions — sophomore Caleb Wright (49-6) at 106 pounds and Brodie Christmas (49-4) at 113 pounds.

Also in Class 5A/6A, two wrestlers capped their careers by winning their fifth state championships, joining an elite group of only 10 other wrestlers in AHSAA history. Moody’s Cory Land capped his prep career with a pin on Homewood’s Joe Galvan in a match that lasted just 44 seconds. The state title was his fifth overall. He finished the season 56–0 and ended his career winning 207 straight matches – the second longest winning streak in AHSAA wrestling history.

Jaden New, Alexandria senior (57-0) won a highly anticipated 152-pound final bout over Shelby County’s Cole Sykes with a 12-5 decision to also claim his fifth straight state title. He last lost a match in his eighth year and won his next 171 fights counting the state championship on Saturday. He closed his prep career with a 285-10 record.

Also in the 5A/6A competition, Pelham elder Bryce Wanagat (38-6) scored two runs just before the buzzer in the third period to beat Opelika rookie Brady Campbell (41-3) to win the state crown of 145 lbs.
