Sacramento police: 1 dead in shooting at South Land Park
A man was fatally shot Sunday night outside a liquor store at a South Land Park mall in Sacramento.
Officers responded around 7:30 p.m. at the 5900 block of South Land Park Drive following a report of a shooting, the Sacramento Police Department said in a news release.
Sacramento Fire Department personnel pronounced the victim, who had at least one gunshot wound, dead at the scene.
The police department said no suspicious information was available and the circumstances leading to the shooting were still under investigation.
The shooting happened at the South Hills Mall, drawing a large law enforcement presence on Sunday evening as authorities investigated the parking lot and investigators probed businesses.
The victim’s identity will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office pending notification of the family.
On Monday morning, mall employees and a local resident were still somewhat shocked by the fatal shooting.
“It’s usually a quiet place here,” said Carol Toscano, who works at Land Park Salon. “For sure, I mean I feel good walking to my car at night.”
Toscano was not at work Sunday night when the man was shot because the barber shop was closed.
Lane Uda, who works at South Hills Hair Studio, was also not at work when the shooting happened. He was back at work Monday morning in the front barber station, staring out the window and pointing to a smudge on the sidewalk that appeared to be blood.
“It’s a bit shocking. It was quite surprising when we heard about it,” Uda said.
Uda and Toscano said the shooting happened just outside Mike’s Liquor store. Two store workers also said the fatal shooting happened in front of the business, but they weren’t working Sunday night and were unsure what could have led to the shots.
Christina McCarty has lived near the mall for over 20 years. She was there Monday morning walking her two dogs. She said it seems crime has increased in the neighborhood in recent years.
“It didn’t surprise me, considering the increase in crime here,” McCarty said of the Sunday night homicide. “What surprised me was the time it happened, when there are people coming to dine here.”
McCarty said neighbors report attempted home break-ins with broken windows, and other South Land Park residents often post information about robberies on the social media app Nextdoor. She also talked about a 7-Eleven convenience store clerk who was shot dead in an apparent robbery last year in South Land Park.
Store clerk Gurpreet Singh, 31, of Stevenson Ranch, died in the Feb. 22 shooting at the 7-Eleven store at 1199 43rd Ave. Police later arrested three people in connection with the deadly robbery which occurred around 3.20am.
Singh’s death was among 57 homicides reported in Sacramento last year, police said. It’s the highest number of homicides in the city since 2006, when there were also 57 homicides, according to crime data compiled by the FBI.
The police department asked anyone with information about the fatal shooting to call officers at 916-808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at 916-443-4357. Tips can also be submitted confidentially through the P3 Tips website and app.
